Danio rerio, commonly known as Zebra Danio, is a popular freshwater aquarium fish among aquarists due to its hardiness, adaptability, and ease of care. It is a small, active, and fast-swimming fish native to rivers in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Zebra Danios have striking black and white stripes and are relatively easy to sex, with females having a rounder belly. In the wild, they live in shoals, and it is recommended to keep them in groups of five or more in the aquarium. Zebra Danios are peaceful fish and can coexist with other peaceful fish species.

Feeding

Zebra Danios are omnivorous and will eat a variety of food, including flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp or bloodworms. It is essential to feed them small amounts of food multiple times a day to prevent overfeeding and to ensure that they receive a balanced diet.

Special Requirements

Zebra Danios are hardy fish and can tolerate a wide range of water parameters. However, it is recommended to maintain a consistent water temperature between 18 to 26°C and a pH range between 6.5 to 7.5. They prefer a well-filtered and heavily oxygenated aquarium with live plants and hiding places.

Ideal Aquarium Size

Zebra Danios are active swimmers and require plenty of swimming space. A minimum aquarium size of 60 liters is recommended to keep a small group of Zebra Danios. Larger aquariums with more swimming space are ideal for larger groups of fish.

Temperament

Zebra Danios are a communal fish and should be kept in groups of at least five individuals. They are peaceful fish and can coexist with other peaceful fish species in a community aquarium. However, they may become aggressive towards each other if the group size is too small, and there is not enough swimming space.

Adult size

Zebra Danios are relatively small fish, with adults typically reaching a size of 4-5 cm in length.

PH Range

The recommended pH range for Zebra Danios is between 6.5 to 7.5.
